Hannibal Regional’s $99 mammogram special helped New London woman find cancer early

HANNIBAL, Mo. — Laurie Means of New London knows firsthand the life-saving importance of an annual mammogram.
As a newly retired woman, she was embracing life to the fullest. Wanting to stay proactive with her health, Means took advantage of Hannibal Regional Radiology’s $99 mammogram special in October 2023. That simple decision resulted in an unexpected diagnosis.
When the routine mammogram revealed a spot of concern, she was sent for an ultrasound and MRI to get a better look. The testing suggested the area was likely cancerous, and the MRI identified an additional area of concern. Means underwent a biopsy, which confirmed she had two different types of breast cancer.
With her world spiraling, Means faced the difficult decision of where to begin her cancer journey. After exploring options outside of the area and talking with her family, she ultimately chose to stay close to home at Hannibal Regional, a decision made even easier knowing that her daughter, who works at Hannibal Regional, trusts the care that is provided.
“I could have gone to a bigger city for cancer care, but the care I received right here at home was just as good if not better,” Means said. “Being here also meant I was able to drive myself to all of my treatments. I strongly recommend getting care locally here at Hannibal Regional. The care I received was excellent. Local is good.”
One of the types of breast cancer Means was up against required chemotherapy before surgery. She quickly met with oncologist Dr. Kevin Palka to develop a plan and begin treatment. Once Means completed all 20 weeks of chemotherapy, she met with surgeon Dr. Stacey Copeland. Together they went over the plan for a double mastectomy. Surgery went well, and Means continues to follow up with both doctors.
Reflecting on her journey, Means said, “I was an emotional mess, but everyone around me was kind and supportive. The people working in the infusion center were always smiling and treated me like a friend. They made me feel normal during a very not-normal time in my life. I was provided so many resources during such a difficult time. They made sure I had everything I needed and answered all my questions. I had a great team that helped me get through an ugly situation.”
Early detection is vital in the fight against breast cancer. Hannibal Regional is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to deliver fast, accurate diagnoses.
“In sharing my story, I want to remind women how important it is to get an annual mammogram,” Means said. “My cancer would not have been detected otherwise. Get your mammogram. It just might save your life.”
