HANNIBAL, Mo. — After the conclusion of year’s annual Shoeless Joe Celebrity Golf Classic on June 14, the Hannibal Regional Foundation announced the event has cumulatively raised more than $1 million in support of local healthcare.

The foundation has partnered with the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame to bring celebrities from various sports and regions across Missouri to Hannibal to play golf for the past 14 years. Past celebrities have included former NFL players Art Still, Tony Reed, Mel Gray and Eddie Moss, MLB players Tom Henke, Brian McRae and Josh Kinney, and many other professional and college athletes.

The event is sponsored by Ken Greger and Steve Viorel of Raymond James Financial Services.

In a press release, Wendy Harrington, president and CEO of the foundation, said, “I am so grateful to everyone who has ever been part of this event. From the very beginning, with Kenny Greger and his sponsorship, the many celebs who have come back year after year, and of course the backing of the leadership of our healthcare system, we have had this goal to host an event that raises both funds and awareness for various healthcare projects in our community.”

Among the projects and services made possible through funds raised by this event are:

  • The creation and then later expansion of the Healthy Way Fitness Trail on the medical campus;
  • The inpatient rehab unit at Hannibal Regional Hospital;
  • Renovation and expansion of the Women’s Care Unit in the hospital;
  • Renovation of the cardiac rehab unit.

Hannibal Regional president and CEO Todd Ahrens said, “Our foundation is truly a partner that works to maximize our ability to meet the continually changing healthcare needs of our community. Every dollar they raise stays local, which means better health right here at home.”
