Marion-Ralls Regional Port Authority seeking support for multi-million dollar port facility

HANNIBAL, Mo. — Several ongoing projects were addressed by the Hannibal City Council Tuesday night. Up first was funding for the Marion Ralls Regional Port Authority. Hannibal Regional Economic Development Council Executive Director Corey Mehaffy spoke on behalf of the MRRPA.

Mehaffy said the MRRPA is negotiating with some landowners in Marion County for the purchase of property on which the $17-$18 million port will be built. Mehaffy asked the council for its support for the Authority to seek a Port and Infrastructure Development grant.

Council members were unanimous in their support and the mayor will sign a letter to that effect.

Next, Hannibal police Lt. Jacob Nacke brought a request for the purchase of portable radios, extended warranties, batteries and chargers from A&W Communications for $10,746.18. All but about $120 of that will come from grant funding for the nearly completed radio project. Once completed, Hannibal and Marion County emergency responders and others will be able to contact their local base from anywhere in the state.

The third big discussion came when City Attorney James Lemon suggested council set a public hearing to allow residents to ask the Missouri Department of Transportation about the plans for the replacement of the Third Street Viaduct. Several residents have already expressed concern that the new bridge will mean the closure of Lyon Street as it travels under the viaduct.

There are also concerns that large trucks, including fire trucks, will be able to pass under the bridge on Warren Barrett Drive.

Council set a special meeting for Tuesday, June 14 at 7 p.m. in council chambers.
