Resurfacing project to begin week of April 8 on Missouri Route 79 in Hannibal

Missouri-Department-of-Transportation

HANNIBAL — A resurfacing project on Missouri Route 79/Mark Twain Ave./N. Third Street from Grand Avenue to Church is expected to begin the week of April 8.

Work will begin on the N. Third portion of the project between North and Church. The route will be reduced to one-lane traffic during working hours. Flaggers will be used to direct motorists through the work zone. Work will occur Monday through Wednesday.

Resurfacing operations will then move to Missouri 79/Mark Twain Avenue between Grand to N. Third.  Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction during working hours with a 10-foot width restriction in place where crews are actively working. Signs and changeable message boards will be utilized to alert motorists of traffic impacts. Work on this section will occur Monday through Thursday.

The $4.7 million contract was awarded last year to Emery Sapp and Sons, Inc. of Columbia. The contract includes four additional resurfacing projects in Audrain, Marion and Ralls counties which are anticipated to begin this spring.

All work scheduled to be completed by late summer includes:

  • Route F (Audrain/Ralls) — Resurface from Missouri Route 19 to north of Daniels Ave. near Vandalia (16.8 miles). Tentatively scheduled to begin mid-May.
  • Route V (Ralls) — Resurface from Business 61 in New London to Route T (4.4 miles).  Tentatively scheduled to begin early May.
  • Route A (Ralls) — Seal coat and resurface from Route J to Business 61 in New London (15.75 miles).  Tentatively scheduled to begin early summer.
  • Route T (Marion/Ralls) — Resurface from eight-tenths of a mile south of Route 79 in Hannibal to Route V (7.7 miles).  Tentatively scheduled to begin late April.

Motorists can expect delays when work begins on the lettered routes above as traffic will be reduced to one lane during the day at the location where crews are actively working. Flaggers and a pilot car will direct motorists through the work zone.  Workers will be present during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, weather permitting. A 10-foot width restriction will be in place for the duration of the project.

For more information on this and other projects in your area, contact MoDOT’s customer center toll-free at 1-888-ASK MODOT (888-275-6636). Drivers should obey all work zone signs and personnel. With an increased number of highway work zones in Missouri, all drivers are urged to pay attention every second while driving, especially through a work zone.
