Art history luncheon Sept. 6 at Hannibal Arts Council to highlight Spanish artists
HANNIBAL, Mo. — The Hannibal Arts Council, 105 S. Main, is the host of its 11th annual art history luncheon at noon on Friday, Sept. 6.
The art history luncheon is a special event designed to fit into a workday lunch hour. The time is used to educate, enrich and engage through focusing on a famous painter, painting or art period.
Artist and art educator Pat Kerns will highlight select Spanish artists’ biographies and painting examples with a special focus on Catalonian painter Montserrat Gudiol (1933-2015). Gudiol studied restoration of old paintings and focused specifically on painting on wood and paper.
The starting point for Gudiol’s work is founded on the broad tradition of figurative art filtered through Symbolism and a stylization that values the detail at the core of the painting. Through the concentric blurring of the surroundings, Gudiol explores the plasticity of the expression of the faces and the spirituality that issues as much from the private and calm halo of the subjects as from the atmosphere that generates it. In 1981, she became the first woman admitted to the Real Academia Catalana of Fine Arts of San Jordi.
Lunch will be served before the presentation. The menu was selected by the HAC Program Committee to compliment the program. The committee has chosen Spanish-themed dishes for the day including Tortilla Española, salad with vinaigrette, tapenade and baguette slices and Tarta de Santiago. Drinks will be provided.
Cost for the program and luncheon is $25 for the general public and $20 for HAC members. Seating is limited. Tickets must be bought by Wed., Sept. 4, online at hannibalartscouncil.eventbrite.com, calling 573-221-6545 or stopping by 105 S. Main (noon-5 p.m. Monday-Friday).
