CARTHAGE, Ill. — The Hancock County Historical Society has a book available for purchase that highlights many Hancock County barns from 1830-1940 with photos and descriptions.

Submitters shared memories and recollections along with these photos for the book title “Farm Barns and Structures.” Some of these barns are no longer standing structures. The 2023 derecho was particularly hard on these structures.

“Farm Barns and Structures” preserves the history of barn building and barn designs and uses other structures necessary for farming operations, tools, machinery and other farming practices of the past. It also includes old agriculture-related advertising from around Hancock County.

The book is available at the Hancock County Historical Society office for $25 plus shipping costs of $5, if applicable.

For more information or to obtain a copy of the book, contact the HCHS at 217-357-0043 or stop by the office at 306 Walnut.
