Hannibal Arts Council to be host of evening of jazz performed by Samantha Fierke + Trio

HANNIBAL, Mo. — The Hannibal Arts Council will be the host a special jazz performance, An Evening of Jazz with Samantha Fierke + Trio, at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, at the Hannibal Arts Council, 105 S. Main. Fierke last performed in Hannibal in 2019.

Hannibal holds a special place in Fierke’s heart. She would come to Hannibal from the big city as a very young girl to play in the woods and sled on snow. It was where her appreciation for jazz was kindled by the music her grandparents, Jack and Phyllis Fierke, loved. Fierke will be the opening act at the Missouri Jazz Fest in September.

Fierke is a jazz vocalist from Columbia, currently enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston for a degree in jazz composition. In May 2022, Fierke released her debut single, soon to be followed by a full eight-track album of original jazz and jazz fusion. In June 2022, Fierke released “Mirage,” an album of eight new songs she wrote and began performing throughout Columbia and the Boston area. The album was submitted by a member of the Recording Academy for Grammy nomination consideration in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category.

In March 2023, Fierke was selected as a recipient of the ASCAP Foundation’s Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award for her opening song, “Kick It Loose.” That same week the Berklee Jazz Composition Department awarded her the Fletcher Henderson Award for composition. She’s been featured in Boston at Wally’s, The Jungle, The Cantab Lounge, Rochambeau and The Porch. She hit New York City jazz hot spots Smalls and Ornithology to jam during spring break.
