QUINCY — The Quincy Civic Music Association is presenting a concert by the Jupiter Quartet at 7:30 p.m. March 26 at St. John’s Anglican Parish.

The Jupiter Quartet is based at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. It consists of violinists Nelson Lee and Meg Freivogel, violist Liz Freivogel (Meg’s older sister) and cellist Daniel McDonough (Meg’s husband, Liz’s brother-in-law). They are celebrating their 20th season together.

The Jupiter Quartet will perform a program featuring Haydn’s String Quartet in D Major, Op. 20 No. 4, Movements 2 and 4 from Florence Price’s from Five Folksongs in Counterpoint, Joan Tower’s In Memory, George Walker’s Lyric, and Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 6 in F minor, Op. 80.

Haydn’s String Quartet in D Major showcases a clever, conversational interplay of all four instruments—a hallmark of the composer considered the “grandfather” of string quartet writing. From there, the Jupiter Quartet explores a wide swath of emotions and experiences from the more recent past, with Florence Price’s complex and rich interpretations on simple folk tunes, the contemplation of tragedy and shared grief embodied by Joan Tower’s 9/11 tribute, In Memory, and the gorgeous “Lyric” from George Walker’s first string quartet. Finishing the program will be Mendelssohn’s final String Quartet in F Major – a dramatic and heartrending piece Mendelssohn wrote as an homage to the memory of his beloved sister Fanny.

Tickets can be purchased for $15 at the door.
