QUINCY — As Adams County prepares to commemorate its 200th anniversary in 2025, the Adams County Bicentennial Commission has announced an initiative to recognize businesses that have stood the test of time.

During Memorial Day weekend in 2025, businesses operating in Adams County for 150 years or more will be honored with commemorative signs, celebrating their legacy and contribution to the community’s history.

“This initiative is a tribute to the resilience and longevity of businesses that have shaped Adams County’s economic landscape,” said Joi Cuartero Austin, senior program officer for Main Street America and executive committee member of the Bicentennial Commission. “These businesses not only represent stability and continuity but also embody the entrepreneurial spirit that has driven our community forward.”

Businesses eligible for recognition are those that have operated continuously within Adams County since 1875 or earlier, regardless of name changes due to mergers or acquisitions. Already identified businesses are The Quincy Herald-Whig, Knapheide Manufacturing, Duker and Haugh Funeral Home and Blessing Hospital.

“We are thrilled to be honoring part of Adams County’s rich tapestry of businesses,” said Kyle Moore, president/CEO of the Great River Economic Development Foundation. “This initiative not only celebrates our past but also underscores the enduring economic vitality and community spirit that define Adams County today.”

The Bicentennial Commission invites community members to contribute information about other qualifying businesses that may have been overlooked. To ensure inclusion in the recognition ceremony, interested parties should contact the Adams County 200 executive committee at AdamsCo200@adamscountyil.gov.

The Adams County Bicentennial celebrates 200 years of history, resilience and community spirit in Adams County, Illinois. The Bicentennial aims to honor the county’s heritage and engage residents and visitors alike in celebrating its contributions to the region.
