QUINCY — The Adams County Health Department issued a public health advisory Tuesday morning after a significant increase in reported syphilis cases across Adams County.

A press release from Emily Andrews, health education supervisor at the health department, said syphilis can lead to serious health problems. It can be treated at any stage with antibiotics. If left untreated, syphilis can result in serious heart, respiratory tract or central nervous system damage.

Anyone who has unprotected sex with casual partners or strangers is at high risk of developing syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections. People must avoid high-risk sexual behaviors and practice safe sex to protect themselves from syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections.

Public health experts urge anyone who believes they may be at risk to get tested and seek treatment if necessary.
