Adams County Sheriff’s Department says calls from ‘sergeant’ claiming warrant for arrest are scam

QUINCY — The Adams County Sheriff’s Department is warning people of a scam involving someone claiming to work for the department.

Deputies have been receiving calls from residents of Adams County saying they are getting phone calls from an unknown person claiming he is a sergeant with the Adams County Sheriff’s Department and that he has a warrant for their arrest. The person then says you need to pay to make this go away, sometimes even asking for payment using Bitcoin.

“We want the public to know this is a scam,” Sheriff Tony Grootens said in a press release. “No police agency would call you and tell you that you have a warrant, and payment must be sent to a specific officer, nor do we accept Apple Cards or Bitcoin as payment. If you or anyone you know receive this type of call, hang up and do not send them any form of payment.”
