QUINCY — The astronomy club at John Wood Community College will have its first meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 28 in room A021.

The club formed in the fall of 2021, but coordinator Bob Weirather was diagnosed with COVID-19 and pneumonia a week after the first meeting and was hospitalized for about three  months. Weirather now is resuming what was started — monthly indoor astronomy lectures and outdoor stargazing events as weather permits.

Weirather previously lived in Tucson, Ariz., the world center for astronomy. He and his wife  recently returned to live in Quincy.

JWCC has agreed to provide the astronomy club a classroom for lectures and an outdoor location for stargazing events. The astronomy club is open to all. Parking and seating is available at JWCC. When stargazing outdoors, multiple telescopes will be available to ease gazers viewing and offer a variety of different objects for study.

Club lectures also are scheduled for May 26, June 30, July 28 and Aug. 25.

Contact Weirather at newideas21@comcast.net or 217-242-7366.
