Body of Nauvoo man found after drowning in Mississippi River
MONTEBELLO TOWNSHIP, Ill. — A Nauvoo man was found to have drowned in the Mississippi River on Wednesday.
Deputies with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department received a report on Tuesday of a canoe that had tipped over and a man in the Mississippi River at the intersection of Illinois 96 and County Road 1720N. Deputies responded, along with the Hamilton Police Department, Nauvoo Fire and Rescue, Hamilton Fire Department, Hancock County EMS, Illinois Conservation Police and AirEvac.
The victim was determined to be Ronald G. McVeigh, 69.
Illinois Conservation Police and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office began recovery efforts. Quincy Area Volunteer Emergency Corps joined recovery efforts later Tuesday night.
McVeigh’s body was located at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Quincy Area Volunteer Emergency Corps and Illinois Conservation Police. They were assisted by the Adams County Coroner.
