Camp Point Central senior awarded appointment to U.S. Military Academy at West Point
CAMP POINT, Ill. — Camp Point Central senior Mason Miller, son of Keith and Shelley Miller, has received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Miller officially inked his acceptance on Thursday, May 16, while surrounded by family, friends, students and faculty.
Principal Zak Huston, football coach Brad Dixon and athletic director/coach Matt Long shared remarks to recognize Miller for his outstanding performance in high school and provided testimony to his character.
Presenting the appointment was Lt. Col. Ray Koenig, a local West Point admissions representative, Quincy Notre Dame graduate and West Point graduate who now serves in the Army Reserves.
A standout student-athlete, Miller successfully met several academic, physical fitness, leadership, character and medical requirements as part of the application process. He received a Congressional nomination from Rep. Mary Miller’s office earlier this year.
Only 1,200 people earn an appointment to West Point out of more than 12,000 applicants.
Miller will embark on his 47-month experience at West Point in July when he starts cadet basic training at West Point. His training will consist of rifle marksmanship, daily physical challenges, land navigation, medical training, mountaineering, hand grenade training, field training exercises and gas chamber training.
Miller will start the academic year in August and work toward earning a bachelor of science degree in engineering under a full government scholarship. He plans to serve as an Army engineer upon graduation.
Upon graduation, Miller will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army entrusted with the responsibility of leading 30-40 soldiers in his command. He will have an opportunity to serve on active duty at locations across the globe.
