City of Hannibal seeking candidates to complete Welch’s term in 5th Ward

HANNIBAL — The City of Hannibal is encouraging residents of the 5th Ward to throw their name in the hat to replace former council member Colin Welch on the Hannibal City Council following his resignation last month.

Potential candidates must be:

  • at least 25 years of age
  • a citizen of the United States
  • a registered voter of Hannibal
  • an inhabitant of Hannibal for at least one year
  • a resident of the 5th Ward for at least six months proceeding
  • current on all city taxes.

People should submit a letter explaining their qualifications and interest for serving on the council to City Clerk Melissa Cogdal’s office at 320 Broadway no later than 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Letters should include the applicant’s name, address and phone number, and addressing envelopes should include the applicant’s name and address along with the words “Request for Interest FIFTH WARD COUNCIL MEMBER.”

Qualified candidates will be interviewed and an appointee will be chosen by the council at its March 4 meeting.

The winner will serve on the council for the remainder of Welch’s term until April 2026. Attendance of bi-weekly council meetings is required, for which members receive a monthly compensation of $200.

Welch resigned from his position as 5th Ward Councilmember at the council’s first meeting of the new year Jan. 7. He stated his reason for resignation was to take more time for his family and business. He is one of the owners of American Glass and Overhead Door, a family business his father started in the mid-1980s.
