Dry conditions lead to open burning ban in Adams County

ADAMS COUNTY – Adams County has enacted an open burning ban, effective immediately.

Adams County Board Chairman Kent Snider issued the ban Sunday.

The move comes at the recommendation of the county’s rural fire chiefs as conditions across the county have become increasingly dry with vegetation dying off from the growing season and no significant rainfall in the forecast. The last measurable rainfall in parts of Adams County was on Oct. 4.

“Our area has progressed further into drought status this fall with the lack of substantial rainfall,” Adams County Emergency Management Agency Meteorologist Brent Clair said. “With the next 8–14-day forecast showing below normal precipitation and mild temperatures, the risk of rapid spread fire conditions will exist through the end of October and into November.”

Open burning is prohibited; however, small recreational fires contained within a ring are permitted. If burning in a fire ring, it should never be left unattended, and water should be on hand to extinguish the fire.

The public is asked to use good judgment and be mindful of increasingly dry conditions when having recreational fires or using an open flame that could start an unwanted fire. The public is asked to call 9-1-1 to report any unattended or uncontrolled fires.
