Family safely escapes home on Spruce before fire damages back porch Saturday morning

QUINCY — A family safely escaped their northside home before an early Saturday morning porch fire.
The Quincy Fire Department was alerted at 12:11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, to a back porch fire at 2241 Spruce. The first crew arrived on scene at 12:14 a.m. and found the back of the house was no longer on fire but was still smoking. The QFD lieutenant on scene canceled all other responding crews but one to assist with exposing possible hot spots and clearing smoke from the house.
The second crew arrived, and both crews worked to remove siding, window trim and wood steps to the porch. They extinguished remaining hotspots and used a smoke ejector to remove smoke from inside the house.
One of the home’s occupants said he was awakened by a banging sound and could smell smoke. He investigated and saw the glow of fire at the back of the house, then got his family out of the house.
Another occupant called 911 while others used buckets of water to put out the fire.
Fire damaged a large area of vinyl siding and wood sheathing, two windows and wood deck stairs and railing. An outlet on the exterior of the house in the area of fire origin was determined to have started the fire.
No civilians or firefighters were injured. Six firefighters were on the scene from two engines. The last fire suppression crew left the scene at 1:13 a.m.
