Garage at residential home on Sixth Street suffers damage in Sunday morning fire

QUINCY — An attached garage suffered damage in a Sunday morning fire at a two-story residential home on the city’s south side.

The Quincy Fire Department was alerted at 10:35 a.m. Sunday to a house fire at 725 S. Sixth. The first crew arrived on the scene at 10:39 a.m. and observed smoke coming from the eaves of the single-car attached garage. A hose line was deployed as the second fire truck and assistant chief arrived. 

The first crew opened the overhead door, which was the only access to the garage, and extinguished the small fire at the back. The second crew assisted in removing a disabled occupant from the house as a precaution. The third fire truck arrived and connected a supply hose from a nearby fire hydrant to the first fire truck. That supply line was not used, since the fire was small and was extinguished with very little water. 

No fire or smoke got into the main body of the house. It was all contained to the garage. 

About a fourth of the rear of the garage sustained fire damage. The rest of the garage sustained heat and heavy smoke damage. 

The cause of the fire is labeled as electrical because of an overloaded circuit. The occupants were not displaced. The last fire suppression crew left the scene at noon. The fire investigation team left the scene at 12:30 p.m.

The Quincy Police Department shut down Sixth Street between Payson Avenue and Washington Street to protect crews. The Adams County Ambulance Service was on the scene in case it was needed. No civilians or firefighters were injured at the scene. 

Twelve firefighters were on the scene from two engines, a quint, the assistant chief and two investigators.
