Hamilton woman facing DUI charges after two-car crash in Carthage kills Elvaston woman

CARTHAGE, Ill. — An Elvaston woman is dead after a two-car crash in Carthage, and a Hamilton woman is facing DUI charges.

A press release from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department said a 2001 black Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Karinsa K. Washburn, 52, of Hamilton crossed the center lane on Buchanan Street and struck a 2005 maroon Chevrolet Malibu driven by Nancy J. Bentley, 73, of Elvaston head on at approximately 5:57 p.m. Thursday, July 6.

The Carthage Fire Department was dispatched for extrication. Both drivers were treated by Hancock County EMS. The sheriff’s department later was notified that Bentley had died. 

Washburn was taken to Carthage Memorial Hospital, where deputies continued their investigation. She was subsequently charged with illegal transportation of alcohol by a driver and driving while under the influence of alcohol. Washburn was treated overnight at the hospital, then transported to the Hancock County Jail upon her release. The press release noted additional charges are anticipated to be filed. 

The Carthage Police Department also responded and assisted with the crash scene and investigation. The Hancock County State’s Attorney’s Office also assisted during the investigation.
