JWCC’s 47th commencement ceremony set for Friday

QUINCY — John Wood Community College will hold its 47th annual commencement ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday, May 13, in the Student Activity Center, 48th and Harrison.

JWCC will confer 359 associate degrees and 132 certificates. Michael Elbe, JWCC president, will confer degrees and certificate. Diane Ary, chair of the JWCC board of trustees, will accept candidates as graduates. 

Justine Rae Obert and Zoey Daniele Obert of Liberty will deliver the invocation. They both earned nursing assistant certificates with excellence and associate in arts degrees with highest honors in December 2021. They will be transferring to St. John’s College of Nursing in the fall to pursue their bachelor of science in nursing degrees.

Arturo Miguel Melendez of Quincy will deliver the student address. He was in the Army National Guard for six years. He has earned a practical nursing certificate. Arturo plans to continue his education with JWCC in the fall to pursue his associate in applied science in nursing degree.

Lauren Elaine Werries of Quincy will deliver the closing remarks. She is a member of the graduating class, was a 2021-22 Presidential Scholar, the 2021-22 Phi Theta Kappa Chapter president and a member of the Student Government Association. She was involved in student life events, a student worker for the Community-Based Outreach Department and volunteered to assist with child-care during student success nights. She earned an associate in arts degree with highest honors. She will be transferring to Concordia University in Wisconsin to pursue a business management degree.  

The board of trustees will confer the title of professor emeritus to Norman Rodriguez and Gary Shupe to honor their service to the college.
