Local Veterans Commission says veteran benefits are status quo

QUINCY – The superintendent of the Veterans Commission of Adams County (VCAC) said veterans’ benefits have not yet been affected as a result of any protocol changes in federal government agencies.

“At the time of this writing, there have been no appreciable changes in the US Department of Veterans Affairs benefit or health care systems for our clients,” Havermale said. The VACAC Veteran Service Officers (VSO) are processing claim applications, appeals and VA work as we always have. The VA seems to be processing applications, and the result of those claims, as they always have.

Havermale added that the VA Clinic in Quincy and the VA hospital in Iowa City, that serve
the majority of our area, are operating as always with no apparent changes as is the Illinois Veterans Home. He said the weekend rally by opponents of President Donald Trump and Congresswoman Mary Miller (R-15th District, Ill.) at Miller’s Quincy office stoked some fears.

“This is our attempt to ease the concerns we have been hearing the last few days,” he said. “This is not to be construed as any type of political comment, endorsement, opposition, support or criticism. We do not represent, make representations for nor speak for any organization, government entity or persons other than the VACAC.”

The VACAC was established by the Adams County Board last year to directly deal with veterans who have benefit issues at the local level.

“If you have specific question or concern, we suggest you call our office or contact your normal VA system representative or point of contact,” Havermale said.
