Man missing overnight rescued from river by Hamilton Police Department, Warsaw Fire Department

HAMILTON, Ill. — A man was rescued from flood waters Saturday morning while he was kayaking in the Mississippi River.

Mike Boley, chief of the Hamilton Police Department, reported in a press release that at approximately 5 a.m. Saturday, July 20, a call was received in reference to a person who had been missing overnight in the flood waters near the Spring Island Campground. 

It was reported that the person had last been seen or heard from at approximately 8 p.m. on Friday, July 19, by a relative who he had been kayaking with in the flood waters of the Mississippi River. The individuals had been attempting to access a camp site at the campground but got separated. One person never arrived to their agreed upon destination. 

A search and rescue operation was put in to place to locate the missing man. 

A Hamilton Police Department officer was utilizing a kayak to search the area at approximately 9 a.m. and located the missing person, partially submerged in the flood waters. The Warsaw Fire Department then assisted the Hamilton Police Department in getting the person back to land, where he was treated by Hancock County EMS. 

Assisting the Hamilton Police Department in the rescue were the Warsaw Fire Department, Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Hancock County EMS, Hancock County Dispatch and 911, Keokuk Fire Department and the Keokuk Volunteer Emergency Corps.
