Mount Sterling man charged last month with two counts of sexual assault of child now faces third count

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation officials recently arrested Gary A. Welty, 71, of Mount Sterling for an additional count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, a Class X felony.

ISP DCI Zone 4 agents arrested and charged Welty with two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child on March 31. After the arrest, another victim came forward. ISP DCI Zone 4 agents obtained a new arrest warrant for Welty on April 14 for one additional count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

Welty was taken into custody by the Brown County Sheriff’s Department in rural Brown County. Bond on the new charge was set at $1 million. Welty posted bond on the new charges.
