Joann Fabrics, 425 N. 32nd, has had a store in Quincy since 1975.

QUINCY — A national retailer that has been in Quincy for 50 years plans to close 533 locations across the United States.

Joann Fabrics is closing 26 stores in Illinois, including the Quincy store. The fabrics and crafts retailer has filed for bankruptcy for the second time in a year. Joann is seeking to reorganize during Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the company announced this week. In a statement, Joann said it is looking to “right-size its store footprint.”

The Quincy store at 425 N. 32nd is owned by Quincy Cullinan, LLC, according to the Adams County GIS site. No closing date for the store has been announced.

Joann Fabrics has approximately 800 stores across the country. The chain did not release an official list to the public, but it did submit locations slated to close to the court as part of the Chapter 11 bankruptcy process. Stores are being closed in every state but Hawaii. California is the state with the most closures with 61.

Joann Fabrics offers fabrics, craft supplies, home décor, seasonal decorations, florals, candles, frames, items for jewelry making, cake decorating tools, games and toys.

Joann Fabrics has been in business for 82 years. It opened its location in Quincy in February 1975 in the former Del Farm grocery store in the Legion Town and Country Shopping Center, now the site of the Quincy Town Center. In September 1978, Joann Fabrics was the first store remodeled for the Quincy Mall complex.
