No people injured, but family pet dies following Hannibal fire

HANNIBAL, Mo. – Hannibal Fire Department crews spent nearly six hours responding to a fire in an apartment building in downtown Hannibal.
At approximately 11:18 p.m., crews were dispatched to 206 S. 4th for a report of a structure fire. All stations responded with eight on duty crew members. An additional four off duty firefighters responded to the scene.
Upon arrival on scene, smoke coming from the eaves of the apartment building, but no flames were originally observed. After a few moments, flames became visible exiting from a second story window. All occupants and numerous pets were evacuated from the building.
Firefighters began to fight the fire but met heavy smoke and fire conditions. Firefighters transitioned to a
defensive attack for a short period of time and then were quickly able to transition back to an offensive attack. Crews were able to contain the fire in approximately one hour.
The building sustained heavy fire and smoke damage in one apartment and smoke and water damage in the remaining apartments. There were no injuries on the scene, but a dog was found dead inside one of the rooms.
Crews were on-scene until just after 4 a.m.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Missouri State Fire Marshall’s office. The Hannibal Fire Department was also assisted at the scene by the Hannibal Police Department, Hannibal Board of Public Works, Marion County Ambulance District, Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office, The American Red Cross, and the Hannibal Building Inspector.
