At Monday’s Quincy City Council meeting, aldermen voted to table the proposed ordinance to give the mayor the authority to handpick his own police and fire chiefs.

Mayor Mike Troup asked the council to table the ordinance regarding the chief appointments.

“We’ve had a lot of discussions on this ordinance over the last week,” Troup said. “In trying to clarify the ordinance, I’d like to see a motion to table this to allow staff time to make the amendments part of the ordinance itself.”

Aldermen voted 7-7 on the request to table. Troup broke the tie and the ordinance will be up for discussion again in two weeks, on the October 4 council agenda.

Voting for the table were aldermen Greg Fletcher (R-1), Jeff Bergman (R-2), Mike Farha (R-4), Tony Sassen (R-4), Mike Rein (R-5), John Mast (R-5) and Jack Holtschlag (D-7).

Opposing were aldermen Eric Entrup (R-1), Dave Bauer (D-2), Kelly Mays (R-3), Parker Freiburg (R-3), Richie Reis (D-6), Katie Awerkamp (D-6) and Ben Uzelac (D-7).

The original version of the Rental Registration Ordinance was was “indefinitely” tabled unanimously via a voice vote. The newly revised Rental Registration Ordinance, which came together after a committee was selected and multiple meetings were held with community input, received the first of three readings.
