QFD crews respond to second apartment fire in two days

QUINCY — The Quincy Fire Department responded to a structure fire in a two-story residential house converted into apartments Thursday morning.

Crews arrived on the scene around 9:20 a.m. Thursday to find smoke coming from the roof and eaves at 123 N. 14th Street. They deployed a hose line and forced entry at the back door. Two other
crews arrived on scene shortly thereafter and connected a water supply hose from the first-arriving truck to the fire hydrant and deployed another hose line and forced entry at the front door, making their way to the second floor.

A third alarm was declared, calling all on-duty crews to the fire scene and calling in enough off-duty personnel to man four reserve trucks.

Crews battled the fire, which had made its way into the attic, for about 30 minutes before it was mostly
extinguished. They then overhauled the attic looking for and extinguishing the remaining embers.

The last fire suppression crew left the scene just before 1:00 p.m. along with the fire investigation team.
Adams County Ambulance Service was on scene to standby in case they were needed. The QFD
Volunteer Rehab Team also responded to assist firefighters recover during their break in operations.

No civilians were injured at the scene. One firefighter had a minor injury to his elbow.

About one-quarter of the second floor sustained fire damage as did one-quarter of the attic. The first floor had a small portion of fire damage and the entire house sustained smoke damage. The apartment house was vacant and had boards over several windows with some doors screwed shut. The cause of the fire is pending additional investigation by QPD. The house had no electricity or gas to it.

There were 20 firefighters on scene from four engines, a quint, the Assistant Chief, two Deputy Chiefs,
the Fire Chief and fire investigators.

QFD crews also responded to an apartment fire in the 700 block of Kentucky on Wednesday.
