QFD responds to apartment fire at Old Post Office

QUINCY — The Quincy Fire Department responded to a fire just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Old Post Office Building at 200 North 8th.

It was reported that smoke was filling the hallway of the building and QFD responded with two engines and the ladder truck carrying 10 firefighters with the incident commander also on the scene.

Quincy Police alerted occupants and removed them from the building as smoke detectors went off.

Crews from Engine Companies #2 and #4 made the initial entrance into the building and were soon followed by the crew of Engine Company #5. Firefighters found a smoldering fire in a vacant apartment
and air pressure water cans were used to extinguish the remaining fire. A building maintenance worker had responded earlier with a fire extinguisher and knocked down most of the fire.

Crews searched for fire extension and conducted smoke evacuation from the building and were assisted at the scene by the QFD ReHab Team, Adams County EMS, and the Quincy Police Department.

The occupants of the 3rd and 4th floor apartments were only displaced for a few hours. Quincy Fire Department Crews and Investigators were all clear from the scene around 1:00 a.m. Thursday.

There was one person was treated for smoke inhalation on the scene and that person refused medical transport. There were no firefighter injuries reported during the incident.

An Investigation of the cause of the fire is ongoing by the Quincy Fire Department and the Quincy Police Department.
