The Quincy Police Department reported Friday afternoon that Officer Matt Hermsmeier has recovered from the gunshot wound he sustained when he was shot while handling a domestic disturbance on Jan. 11.

Hermsmeier returned to full duty today “and is very happy to be back to work”, according to the statement.

Hermsmeier, a 25-year veteran of the Quincy Police Department, was shot in the right upper arm while responding to the call in the 700 block of North 3rd just before noon on Jan. 11. Another officer returned fire and killed the suspect.

Donald H. Hibbard, 49, was pronounced dead at Blessing Hospital later that day.

Hermsmeier was transported to the Blessing Hospital Emergency Room by law enforcement personnel for treatment. He was treated in the emergency room before undergoing an hour-long surgery to repair damage to his arm.
