MAYWOOD, Mo. — The Lewis County Sheriff’s Department formally arrested a Quincy, Ill., man on April 23 in relation to an incident that began in Maywood on Nov. 30, 2024.

At approximately 3:49 a.m. on Nov. 30, 2024, a resident of Maywood caught several people attempting to steal things from a vehicle parked in the driveway. The resident confronted the suspects, who then fled the scene. One of the suspects fired a weapon into the air as they fled. The resident then followed the suspects into West Quincy and identified the vehicle and license plate.

It was later discovered it had been stolen out of Quincy. The suspects fired a weapon and struck the resident’s vehicle. The Quincy Police Department later located Samuel Schuring, 20, of Quincy and a co-defendant and took them into custody in relation to Illinois charges. The suspects were interviewed, and Schuring was identified as the primary suspect and shooter.

Schuring had been held in the Adams County (Ill.) Jail since December and has several pending charges remaining. This arrest is a result of a collaborative investigation conducted by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department, Quincy Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff’s Department.

Lewis County Deputy Jason Slater then sought charges through Lewis County Prosecuting Attorney Chelsea Fellinger, who filed formal charges on Dec. 9, 2024. Schuring was charged with:

  • Unlawful use of a weapon, a Class B felony;
  • Armed criminal action, an unclassified felony;
  • Receiving stolen property, a Class D felony;
  • Possession of a controlled substance (hydrocodone), a Class D felony;
  • Tampering with a motor vehicle in the third degree, a Class A misdemeanor, and
  • Stealing, a Class A misdemeanor.

Judge Corey Moon issued an arrest warrant on Dec. 9, 2024. Schuring is lodged in the Lewis County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
