UPDATE: Quincy man captured after allegedly battering woman, stealing car and fleeing; attempted escape from Hancock jail fails

QUINCY — A Quincy man is in custody Sunday morning in the Hancock County Jail after he allegedly battered a women, stole a car and fled from Quincy before eventually being arrested in Hancock County. 

Officers from the Quincy Police Department were dispatched to 1000 N. Eighth in Quincy at approximately 11:17 p.m. Saturday in reference to a disturbance. Upon the officers’ arrival, a female victim said a male she knew, Kalel Robinson, had battered her and fled before police arrived. The female victim was transported to Blessing Hospital by the Adams County Ambulance Service. She was treated for injuries and released. 

Fifteen minutes later, QPD officers were dispatched to 834 Locust in reference to a vehicle theft. Upon arrival, the officers learned Robinson, 37, of 307 S. 11th, had crashed his blue 2009 Dodge Avenger in the front yard of that residence. A male victim at that location said Robinson pointed a firearm at him, stole his 2008 Chevrolet Duramax truck and fled eastbound on Locust. 

Officers from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department received notification from Adams County Sheriff’s Department deputies that they were attempting to stop a stolen vehicle on Illinois 336 at the county line. The vehicle drove through Bowen and Augusta as Hancock County deputies maintained a safe distance behind.

Robinson failed to stop the vehicle for authorized emergency vehicles and continued into Plymouth, then back on to country roads. Finally, Robinson lost control of the vehicle and crashed it at the intersection of County Road 3050 E and County Road 950 N. Robinson was taken into custody without further incidents even though he was armed with a handgun.

He faces charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, fleeing/attempting to elude a peace officer, aggravated domestic battery, armed robbery, attempted kidnapping, unlawful use of a weapon, theft over $10,000 and numerous traffic violations in Hancock County.

Adams County Sheriff’s Department, Adams County Ambulance Service, Quincy Fire Department, Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, and the Illinois State Police assisted the Quincy Police Department. The Illinois State Police, Carthage Police, Hamilton Police,. Hancock County EMS, Memorial Hospital, MedForce and McDonough County Sheriff’s Office assisted in Hancock County.

Robinson attacked two corrections officers at the Hancock County Jail during the early-morning hours on Sunday. Deputies and local police officers were called to the scene. Robinson attempted to escape the jail but never made it outside of the jail. One of the sheriff’s office canines was deployed to take Robinson back into custody.

Robinson was transported and treated at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, then transferred to Peoria, where he remains in custody under guard by sheriff’s deputies.

The incident at the jail is under investigation and further charges will be filed.
