Quincy Park Board approves new playgrounds, other facilities

QUINCY — The Quincy Park District Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a series of projects Wednesday night that will enhance some of the city’s recreational facilities and sites.
Among those projects is the replacing of 6,100 square feet of safety surfacing at the Lincoln Park playground, at a cost of $105,856. Repairs have been made at the site on a consistent basis in recent weeks and months.
“The (surfacing) is 10 years old, and needs to be replaced,” said Rome Frericks, executive director of the Park District. “Staff will remove the old safety surfacing.”
All-Inclusive Recreation LLC of Farmington, Mo. will install the new safety surfacing.
Frericks said $140,000 from the 2025 general obligation bond had been budgeted for the project.
“It will be well worth the cost,” commissioner Patty McGlothlin said. “That playground receives unbelievable use.”
Other board approvals included:
- The Paul Dennis Complex receiving a new $64,998 playground system later this year. Frericks said $65,000 had been allocated for the project from bond funds.
Play Power Inc. of Monett, Mo. will be providing the playground system, fiber and edging.
“This will enhance the southeast part of town, and should be installed later in the summer,” Frericks said.
Moorman Park receiving the OK for repairs to existing pickleball, fusball and basketball courts that have begun to hold water and are showing significant cracks throughout the courts.
Matt Higley, director of parks, informed the board the courts will be repaired and painted as part of a $59,874 repair and color-finishing project to be handled by All Weather Courts of Dawson, Ill.
Information provided to the board said $50,000 of bond funds had been budgeted for the project.
- Milling and resurfacing of the two roads to T-Ball fields at Moorman Park, plus the 39th Street intersection, will be done for $215,000 by Diamond Construction of Quincy. The board had budgeted $225,000 of bond money for the project.
“The roads have not been resurfaced since the mid-1990s,” Higley said.
- Approving $40,468 for roof and gutter repair of the Lorenzo Bull House. Full Service Roofing of Quincy was awarded the contract. Frericks reported $30,000 from the Museum Fund for the Lorenzo Bull House had been budgeted for the project. The additional money will come from Museum Fund reserves.
- Awarding a $535 per hour rate to Canton (Mo.) Towing for maintenance dredging at Art Keller Marina and Kesler Park boat ramps. Higley reported $35,000 had been authorized in the 2025 budget. The period covered by the bid is May 1 to April 30.
“To facilitate boating, dredging is frequently needed after flooding,” Higley said. “Based on the amount of flooding, dredging could be extensive. The cost could exceed the district’s bid limit.”
