QUINCY — The Quincy Police Department says a recent phone scam involves someone pretending to be Adam Yates, chief of the police department.

A press release from QPD says the scam consists of a phone call from someone posing as the chief of police advising the person on the phone of a pending arrest warrant(s) and the seizure of assets that would take place without compliance. The caller seeks personal information and money.

The phone call appears to come from (217) 228-4470 — the Quincy Police Department’s general phone number. The scammer uses Yates’ name to make the scam seem more realistic. The caller also directs the person to search the phone number to confirm that it is legit.

“Rest assured, if we have an urgent legal matter, civil process paperwork or a warrant for your arrest, we will come to you,” Sgt. Nick Hiland said in the press release. “We will never call you or ask for financial information over the phone. Be alert and don’t become a victim of this scam.”
