Quincy School Board approves levy

QUINCY — The Quincy School Board adopted its 2022 tax rate at Wednesday night’s meeting.

The levy will bring in nearly $42.9 million in property tax revenue, based in the county’s equalized assessed valuation (EAV). The rate will be around $3.93 per $100 in EAV, which is slightly less than last year’s rate.

The levy brings in about half of the Quincy School District’s annual revenue and makes up more than 50 percent of a property owner’s tax bill, if they live in the district.

Building Committee Chairman Richard McNay said the plan to convert the former K&L Arena to accommodate the district’s transportation, maintenance and information technology departments should be presented to the board in January and, if approved, would be put out for bid in February.

The district purchased the building at 1600 N. 43rd in June for $2 million and is expected to pour another $1 million to convert the space, which will house all most of the district’s vehicles.

The Board also reviewed the 2023-24 school calendar, which calls for classes to start on Aug. 16, 2023 and end on May 21, 2024, depending on use of snow/emergency days. Teachers will report for inservice on Aug. 14.

The calendar will be voted on by the Board in January. The Quincy Federation of Teachers also had input into the process.

Board member Carol Nichols also told Muddy River News she would not seek re-election in April.
