CANTON, Mo. — A Canton man, a registered sex offender, was arrested March 20 after he was seen in the pickup line at a school in the Canton R-V School District.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Department received a tip on March 20. Sgt. Devon Willis then began an investigation and verified Charles William Hanley, 34, had been with his paramour and her children on school grounds, on previous occasions. Hanley, who is on parole after early release from the Missouri Department of Corrections, was found and taken into custody.

Formal charges were then sought through Lewis County Prosecutor Chelsea Fellinger. Hanley was charged with two counts of failing to register as required as a sex offender, (unclassified felonies) and one count of a sex offender being present within 500 feet of a school, a class A misdemeanor.

Associate Judge Corey Moon then issued a warrant for the arrest of Hanley, who is lodged in the Lewis County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 cash-only bond. Hanley made his first appearance before Moon on March 24. A bond review hearing is set for March 31.
