QUINCY — The Adams County Sheriff’s Office arrested three people this week in connection with two car thefts in the county.

Deputies located two vehicles left abandoned and running at around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. One was in the Lake Shore Hills subdivision east of Quincy off Ill. 104. The other had been crashed into a tree near the Lake Shore Hills turnoff on Ill. 104. Both vehicles had been left unlocked with the keys inside.

A press release from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office noted the contents of both vehicles had items in them that were consistent with burglaries of other vehicles that have recently occurred throughout the county.

Three suspects were identified and arrested on Wednesday — Kevis J. McHatton, 18, of the 700 block of S. 20th in Quincy; Lawrence G. Rideout, 18, of the 1500 block of Cherry in Quincy; and a male juvenile who was released to the custody of his parent.

McHatton and Rideout both face the following charges:

  • Two counts of possession of a stolen vehicle.
  • Burglary of a motor vehicle.
  • Two counts of criminal damage to property, valued between $10,000 and $500,000.

Rideout also faces a charge of possession of cannabis between 30 and 100 grams. He remains in custody at the Adams County Jail.

McHatton was placed on pretrial release and has a Sept. 18 court date. He is on juvenile parole for similar offenses and a notice to appear for a DUI in Adams County from July.
