Unattended burning cigarette determined to be cause of Tuesday fire in Hannibal

HANNIBAL, Mo. — The Hannibal Fire Department was dispatched Tuesday by Northeast Missouri Emergency Communications (911) for a report of a structure fire at 3612 Iowa. All stations responded with 12 firefighters. 

Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters found smoke coming out of the structure. Firefighters found no one home and had the fire extinguished and under control in approximately 20 minutes.

No injuries were reported. HFD was assisted by the Hannibal Police Department, Marion County Ambulance Department, Hannibal Building Inspector office, Hannibal Board of Public Works, Northeast Missouri Emergency Communications, Red Cross and Missouri Division of Fire Safety Investigation unit. 

After an investigation by the Hannibal Fire Department and the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s office, the fire is being listed as accidental due to an unattended burning cigarette.
