Vacant building at 215 Oak declared total loss after Friday afternoon fire

QUINCY — A vacant commercial two-story brick building at 215 Oak has been declared a total loss after a Friday afternoon fire.

The Quincy Fire Department was dispatched at 2:50 p.m. to a report of a structure fire in the Second and Oak area. Heavy smoke could be seen in the area by responding units.  Upon arrival, heavy smoke and flames were visible on both levels of the 2-story building. 

Acording to a press release from the Quincy Fire Department, Engine Company 4 and Engine Company 2 made the initial fire attack on the building. They were soon assisted by Engine Companies 5 and 6. Firefighters conducted a defensive fire attack due to the dangerous conditions of the building.  During extinguishment, the roof of the building collapsed, which hindered further extinguishment.  

The fire was eventually extinguished at around 5:45 p.m.

An occupant from the front portion of 215 Oak was assisted out of the building, along with her dogs.  No Injuries were reported.

Third Street (U.S. 24) had to be closed briefly because to a water supply line that had to be laid across the road. The Quincy Police Department, Illinois State Police and Quincy Central Services assisted at the scene and conducted traffic control. Adams County Emergency Management and Adams County Ambulance Service also were on scene. 

Fire Investigators from the Quincy Fire Department, along with arson investigators from the Quincy Police Department, are investigating the fire.  The cause of the fire is undetermined.  Anyone with information on the fire should contact the Quincy Fire Department 217-228-4459 or Crime Stoppers at 217-228-4474.
