Will Sullivan Auction to unveil “Quincy Police” Colt revolver at Quincy Museum
Will Sullivan Auction will be unveiling and donating a rare “Quincy Police” Colt revolver to the Quincy Museum on
December 1 at 12:00pm on behalf of an anonymous Colt Collector.
The rare handgun will be on display in the Quincy Museum following the presentation.
“Having a piece of Quincy history like this “Quincy Police” revolver at our Quincy Museum is such an asset to our local community,” said Will Sullivan. “The anonymous donor wanted to make sure one piece of history stayed within our community to benefit generations to come.”
In 1877, The Quincy Police Department special ordered 24 Type-5 Conversions with a loading gate, which was
not offered on any other Type-5 models. All of these special-order revolvers also featured factory engravings: “QUINCY POLICE NO. #” (each number unique to that pistol 1-24) on the left side of barrel, “Colt’s Patent #409” on the cylinder and a rolled marked cylinder engraving of Stagecoach Robbery Scene.
Colt records show that all 24 of these special order guns were shipped out on “April 11, 1877 to Langeman & Bros, Quincy, ILL”. Colt collectors and historians now refer to these guns as the “Quincy Police Version” and only seven are known to still exist today.
These Quincy Police versions are by far the most desirable Colt Type-5 variations to collectors and are very rarely
offered at public auction. A private Quincy collector has acquired four of the seven original revolvers known to exist
and has decided to sell three on Will Sullivan Auction’s upcoming online winter auction on Saturday, December 11 at
willsullivanauction.com, (Lots 105, 109 & 113). These highly coveted pieces can be seen online right now, and bids are being accepted.
“When these revolvers are sold this month, there is no guarantee that someone local will purchase them,” says Sullivan. “This is a great opportunity for a private collector to own a documented piece of history rather than see it disappear from Quincy’s history forever.”
Each one of these revolvers has an original piece of history (Badge, Officers’ Tag, Holster) that goes with it. Each “extra” is a special piece of history, on its own, and is original/authentic to these guns. Each revolver will also have a certified Colt Letter of Origin.
Currently, there are over 10,000 registered bidders across the world for this month’s auction.
You can place your bid at willsullivanauction.com.
