I kind of like No. 10. A lot … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 1,013 of The Daily Dirt.

1. As you age, personal rules tend to change. So do things like deadlines and your memory (or lack thereof).

I recently came across a variety of items built around the general theme of “Commandments for Seniors”. I borrowed a few thoughts from several different lists. How many of these apply to you?

  • 1. On time is when you get there.
  • 2. The biggest lie you tell yourself is, “I don’t need to write that down. I’ll remember it.”
  • 3. You don’t need anger management, you need people to stop irritating you.
  • 4. Your people skills are just fine. It’s your tolerance of idiots that needs work.
  • 5. “In style” are the clothes that fit you.
  • 6. You’ve noticed people your age are much older than you.
  • 7. “One for the road” means peeing before you leave the house.
  • 8. Talk to yourself. There are times when you need expert advice.
  • 9. Growing old should have taken longer.
  • 10. Aging has slowed you down, but it hasn’t shut you up.

2. Did you know (Part 72)

  • That Gene Wilder’s role in “Blazing Saddles” was originally offered to Johnny Carson.
  • That Jeff Bridges turned down starring roles in “Jaws,” “Shawshank Redemption,” “Pretty Woman” and “Speed”.
  • That Matt Damon’s role as Private Ryan in “Saving Private Ryan” was originally offered to Edward Norton and Neil Patrick Harris.
  • That Glenn Close auditioned for the lead role in “Carrie,” which went to Sissy Spacek.
  • That the Boston Celtics’ payroll next season will be a projected $225 million, PLUS a $210 million luxury tax penalty. That’s $435 million, the largest salary/luxury total in league history.

3. I found this quite intriguing — Rolling Stone magazine’s top 10 all-time Canadian artists:

First, you get Rolling Stone’s top 10, then you get The Daily Dirt’s

Rolling Stone

  • 1. Joni Mitchell
  • 2. Neil Young
  • 3. Rush
  • 4. Leonard Cohen
  • 5. Drake
  • 6. The Band
  • 7. Shania Twain
  • 8. The Weekend
  • 9. Alanis Morrisette
  • 10. Celine Dion

The Daily Dirt

  • 1. Gordon Lightfoot (Seriously, how could this guy have been left off Rolling Stone’s top 10? Although the magazine had him No. 11, it’s akin to making Babe Ruth “the first guy off the bench” in an all-time MLB starting nine. “I can’t think of any Gordon Lightfoot song I don’t like,” Bob Dylan once said. “Every time I hear a song of his, it’s like I wish it would last forever.” Amen, Bob.)
  • 2. Shania Twain
  • 3. Anne Murray
  • 4. Bryan Adams
  • 5. Guess Who
  • 6. Celine Dion
  • 7. Neil Young
  • 8. Leonard Cohen
  • 9. Barenaked Ladies
  • 10. K.D. Lang

Steve Thought O’ The Day – Speaking of Mr. Lightfoot, I would say “Carefree Highway,” “Did She Mention My Name,” “For Lovin’ Me” and “Cotton Jenny” lead a rather large list of personal favorites. The only singer I hold in higher esteem is Rod Stewart.

Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. What? No Rush on your list? There is an argument for them to be No. 1!
