Daily Dirt for Sunday, May 25, 2025

Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 1,294 of The Daily Dirt.

1. What fast food chains get your order correct most of the time?

There is nothing worse than languishing in a drive-thru line for five or 10 minutes — or even longer — and as you are pulling away discover your order was totally botched. Do you accept the wrong order or get back in line and start the process all over? “When it comes to fast food, speed is crucial, but accuracy is just as important,” writes Francisco Velasquez of qz.com. “Customers not only expect their orders to be correct, but also want a smooth, hassle-free experience … (that kind of mistake) can make or break a visit.”

The following chains got the highest combined grades in a number of nationwide surveys I inspected. Hardee’s and Cane’s were listed as honorable mention choices below because they were not ranked high enough on all of the data I used to be included among the leaders.

  • 1. Chick-fil-A, 93 percent.
  • 2. McDonald’s, 90 percent.
  • 3. Burger King, 88.5 percent.
  • 4. Arby’s. 88 percent.
  • 5. Wendy’s, 86 percent.
  • 6-tie. Taco Bell, 85.5 percent.
  • 6-tie. KFC, 85.5 percent.
  • 8. Dunkin’ Donuts, 85 percent.

Honorable mention: Hardee’s, Cane’s.

One note about Chick-fil-A’s No. 1 ranking. All 3,059 of its nationwide outlets are closed on Sundays, but apparently that was not a drawback for most respondents.

2. Did you know (Part 373)

  • That breakfast is not necessarily the most important meal of the day, as we have heard for years and years and years. In 1944, General Foods coined the phrase in an effort to sell more Grape Nuts cereal.
  • That ranch dressing is dyed. One ingredient in ranch is titanium dioxide which is used to make it look whiter. It’s the same ingredient that is used in sunscreen and paint for coloring.
  • That fruit-flavored snacks shine because of car wax. Yep, the same wax that is used on cars, carnauba wax, is the same type of wax that is used to give gummy candy a glossy sheen.
  • That the red food dye for some candies, like Skittles, is made from boiled beetles. A common red food dye, carminic acid, is made from the crushed bodies of a beetle called the Dactylopius coccus. This acid is used in maraschino cherries, strawberry and raspberry flavored candy and lipstick.
  • That the “cream” in a Twinkie is not actually cream. We’re always excited to get a solid bite of that fluffy goodness, but it’s actually nothing more than vegetable shortening.

3. I found this extremely interesting.

Washington State may have the most random college football schedule ever. The Cougars will play opponents from NINE different conferences and a league rival TWICE in the 2025 regular season. The schedule:

  • Aug. 30: Idaho
  • Sept. 6: San Diego State
  • Sept. 13: at North Texas
  • Sept. 20: Washington
  • Sept. 27: at Colorado State
  • Oct. 4: Off
  • Oct. 11: at Ole Miss
  • Oct. 18: at Virginia
  • Oct. 25: Toledo
  • Nov. 1: at Oregon State
  • Nov. 8: Off
  • Nov. 15: Louisiana Tech
  • Nov. 22: at James Madison
  • Nov. 29: Oregon State
