DAILY DIRT: Cold outside? Don’t worry, I’m here to help
Curl up in your coziest easy chair, cover up with your favorite blanket and get a cup of hot chocolate — or glass of Mountain Dew, with plenty of ice — ready for a day in the front of the telly … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 840 of The Daily Dirt.
1. Baby, it’s cold outside.
And by all indications it’s going to stay that way for awhile.
How can you best sum up how frigid it was over the weekend — and how cold it remains as you are reading this?
Try some of these thoughts:
- “Nothing burns like the cold.” — novelist George R.R. Martin. (My fingers attested to that when my wife, Kathy, thought it would be a great idea to shovel the driveway in the midst of the Great Blizzard of ’24.)
- “Winter forms our character and brings out our best.” — author Tom Allen. (Dear Tom, my character is just fine when it’s 70 degrees.)
- “Winter is not a season, it’s an occupation.” — novelist Sinclair Lewis. (That exact thought began to sink in early this morning.)— “Feeling a little blue in January is normal.” — actress Marilu Henner. (Well, Marilu, I must be pretty darn normal … )
- “In seed time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy.” — poet William Blake. (Enjoy? Come on, Bill.)
- “It’s too cold outside for angels to fly.” — singer Ed Sheeran. (It’s too cold outside for most things, Ed.)
- “Welcome, winter. Your late dawns and chilled breath make me lazy, but I love you nonetheless.” — quotation anthologist Terri Guillemets. (Dear Terri, you’re nuts. But I mean that in a good way. I think.)
- “A lot of people like snow. I find it to be the unnecessary freezing of water.” — journalist John Geddes. (This, my friends, says it all.)
2. I’m always here to help, and today is no different.
First of all, don’t even think about going outside. Secondly, here are some medal-worthy movies to watch while covered up with that aforementioned blanket in your favorite recliner:
Gold medal: “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993): It’s the perfect winter film to watch on a day like today. It’s hard to believe this movie is 31 years old. It seems like just yesterday I watched it for the first time. Besides, just about any Tom Hanks movie on a cold, winter day will make you feel better.
Silver medal: “You’ve Got Mail” (1998): “This movie just gives us those cozy feelings we crave when it’s cold out,” according to writer Elizabeth Logan.
Bronze medal: The “Twilight” series (2008-2012): I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. I loved the “Twilight” movies. The fact that winter is a backdrop in most of the films makes them a perfect choice for today (and most of the coming week). Oh, and there are also vampires. Lots of vampires. When Kristen Stewart turns into a vampire is one of the highlights of all cinematic history.
3. The College football season is now officially be over, and as a parting gift The Daily Dirt offers five final possibilities for the best CFB name of the year:
- 1. Moh Bility, Rice cornerback.
- 2. Pig Cage, UTSA linebacker.
- 3. Storm Duck, Louisville defensive back
- 4. Dude Person, Central Arkansas defensive back.
- 5. Da’Realyst Clark, Defiance wide receiver.
- 6. De’Coldest Crawford, Louisiana Tech wide receiver
