Daily Dirt for Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025

It’s been a long, long time since a vagitus has awakened me in the middle of the night … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 1,211 of The Daily Dirt.

1. Awhile back we offered a list of items that actually HAVE names that seemed to surprise some readers. Today we are expanding that list.

  • The following are legitimate names for some of most of the more bizarre and mildly absurd things in life:
  • The day after tomorrow is called overmorrow.
  • The cry of a newborn baby is called a vagitus.
  • Illegible handwriting is called griffonage. (My wife definitely has griffonage.)
  • That tiny plastic table placed in the middle of a pizza is called a box tent.
  • When you combine an exclamation mark and question mark (!?) it is referred to as an interrobang. (I think this has become more popular in the age texting.)
  • That utterly sick feeling you get after eating or drinking too much is called crapulence.
  • When your stomach rumbles, that is called a wamble.
  • The condition of finding it difficult to get out of bed in the morning is called dysania. (I’ve had dysania my entire life.)
  • The space between your nostrils is called columella nasi.
  • Speaking of space, that area between your eyebrows is called a glabella, unless you have a unibrow.

2. Did you know (Part 284)

  • That MLB Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer never gave a home run with the bases loaded. Palmer worked innings 3,948 innings in a career that spanned 1965 to 1984. He faced 213 batters with the bases full. The closest he came to giving up a grand slam was on 1977 in Cleveland when Rico Carty hit a ball OVER the center-field fence, but Al Bumbry leaped, reached over the fence and pulled the ball back.
  • That Krispy Kreme Doughnuts now have four movie snacks flavors: Caramel Popcorn, Candy Double Feature, Cookie Dough Superstar and Blue Raspberry Slush.
  • That Taco Bell’s next addition will be a Milk Bar Birthday Cake Churro.
  • That Dairy Queen is rolling out a new Crunchin’ Cookie dipped cone. Cookies and Cream pieces are inside the dip.
  • That the film “Napoleon Dynamite” was made on a $400,000 budget and star Jon Heder was only paid $1,000. The film went on to gross more than $46 million.

3. As we get closer to the start of baseball season, here’s a sampling of average prices of concession items from the 1954 MLB season, compared to prices 70 years later during the 2024 season.

We’re using 2024 prices from Busch Stadium in St. Louis:

1954

  • Hot dogs: 25 cents
  • Soda: 15 cents
  • Popcorn: 25 cents
  • Beer: 35 cents
  • Coffee: 10 cents

2024

  • Hot dogs: $14.75 (jumbo hot dog and fry combo)
  • Soda: $6.50 to $9.75
  • Popcorn/peanuts: $5.75
  • Beer: $9.75 to $15
  • Coffee: $4.50

Steve Thought O’ the Day — If you’ve never seen “Napoleon Dynamite,” I highly suggest that you do.

Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. Sure didn’t think vagitus meant that.
