DAILY DIRT: DR FUNN is the new No. 1 in Great Plate Debate

Daily Dirt for May 30, 2025
I kind of like Finland’s idea of dealing with speeding tickets and the impact of missed free throws in North Korea … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 1,300 of The Daily Dirt.
1. It was one of those magic moments.
I pulled into a parking spot earlier this week, and directly ahead of me there it was. I’m pretty sure there were angelic choruses echoing overhead.
Staring directly at me was the license plate DR FUNN. Yes, there is a new gold medal holder in the latest Great Plate Debate IV rankings.
Here’s the updated medal standings:
Gold medal: DR FUNN (This one may be tough to unseat.)
Silver medal: ALF
Bronze medal: LUV2YAK
Other top plates seen in the past week:
- ONE HOPE
- PHINS UP
- MIS VIKI
- MI22OU (This one gets a special nod, simply for creativity)
- WOOK
- VOID
- OLE DAD 7
- D HUNTER
2. Did you know (Part 379)
- That in Finland, speeding fines are determined by the offender’s income.
- That new parents lose the equivalent of 44 days of sleep during their baby’s first year.
- That in the two or three minutes it may take you read The Daily Dirt, researchers say
- That in 1987, 25 percent of all mattress sales were water beds.
- That in North Korean basketball, slam dunks are worth three points, three-point shots are worth four points if it is a perfect swish and a point is deducted for missing free throws.
3. MLB reports the following are the top 10 in jersey sales:
- 1. Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Dodgers
- 2. Freddie Freeman, Los Angeles Dodgers
- 3. Juan Soto, New York Mets
- 4. Mookie Betts, Los Angeles Dodgers
- 5. Aaron Judge, New York Yankees
- 6. Francisco Lindor, New York Mets
- 7. Bryce Harper, Philadelphia Phillies
- 8. Jose Altuve, Houston Astros
- 10. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Los Angeles Dodgers
Note: There are no Cardinals, Cubs, Royals or White Sox jerseys in the top 20.
Steve Thought O’ The Day — Speaking of baseball, the Dodgers currently have 14 pitchers on the IL. Those injured players’ combined salaries total $102 million, which is more than the entire payrolls of the Guardians, Pirates, Athletics, Marlins and White Sox.

Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. There are no Cardinals worthy of having a Top 10 jersey.
