Daily Dirt for July 14, 2021
by Steve Eighinger
Three more thoughts as we inch closer to the dog days of summer. This is Vol. 6 of your Daily Dirt dosage:
1. Fifty years ago at this time I was preparing to enter my senior year of high school. These were the songs atop the Billboard charts that summer:
A. “It’s Too Late/I Feel the Earth Move,” by Carole King.
B. “Indian Reservation,” by Mark Lindsay (after he left Paul Revere and the Raiders).
C. “You’ve Got a Friend,” by James Taylor.
D. “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” by the Bee Gees.
Fifty years later, I’d have to say my favorite from among those four is the Bee Gees’ offering.
2. CollegeFootballNews.com’s current semifinal playoff projection for a few months down the road: Oklahoma vs. Clemson and Alabama vs. Ohio State. Yeah, it’s time to expand the field to at least eight, and preferably 12 or 16.
3. I went to the snack area at Sam’s Club over the weekend and those amazing Nathan’s hot dogs — you know, the ones that are about the size of a dirigible — were not available, and won’t be (I was told) for at least another month. No specific reason was given.
