Daily Dirt for July 18, 2021

By STEVE EIGHINGER
G’day, mates! Welcome to Vol. 10:
1. Remember back to July 1981? That’s 40 years ago for those who have a little trouble with math. These were the most popular summer songs that month.
A. “Bette Davis Eyes” by Kim Carnes: One of my top five all-time favorites outside of anything recorded by Rod Stewart.
B. “All Those Years Ago” by George Harrison: Arguably his finest solo effort.
C. “The One That You Love” by Air Supply: Sorry, but just about anything released by Air Supply was borderline schlocky garbage.
2. This may not sit well with Cardinals baseball or Blues hockey fans, but I really wonder if St. Louis should be considered a major sports town. The city has no NFL or NBA franchise, and let’s be honest, the NHL is a distant fourth among the so-called big four pro sports. Just food for thought.
3. Favorite TV detective programs from the 1990s? It was a decade with very few such (quality) shows, but here are my top three:
A. “Silk Stalkings”: This was one of those great USA Network shows from that era. Rob Estes and Mitzi Kapture were the stars.
B. “Twin Peaks”: I still can’t believe this show was only around for two years, but it left quite an imprint. Kyle MacLachlan played Special Agent Dale Cooper.
C. “Law and Order: SVU”: This one gets in just under the wire since it debuted in 1999. Mariska Hargitay and crew are still going strong today.
