DAILY DIRT: From ‘Angel Eyes’ to ‘Funky Cold Medina,’ the most memorable songs from 35 years ago
Roxette was one of the most underrated groups of the late 1980s and early 1990s … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 806 of The Daily Dirt.
1. It’s hard to believe it was 35 years ago we were all singing along to the following tunes, which I’ve ranked, of course, because here at the world headquarters of The Daily Dirt we rank everything.
So welcome to day No. 2 of our three-day lookback at what was on the radio 30, 35 and 40 years ago.
Join me in another trip down memory lane:
- 1. “Angel Eyes,” by the Jeff Healy Band: This song was also featured in the slam-bang Patrick Swayze-Sam Elliott movie “Road House”. “Angel Eyes” eventually peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. It should have been No. 1.
- 2. “Funky Cold Medina,” by Tone Loc: For the record, Flavor Flav was first to use the term “cold medina.”
- 3. “Get Outta My Dreams,” by Billy Ocean: This was Mr. Ocean’s third and final No. 1 song. And his best.
- 4. “Kiss Me Deadly,” by Lita Ford: Ford’s signature song was revived in 2019 and used in the superhero film “Captain Marvel”.
- 5. “The Look,” by Roxette: The peroxide blonde co-lead singer, Gun-Marie Fredriksson, was a fantastic talent. She died of cancer in 2019.
2. Here’s something to ponder.
Since 1997, Jennifer Lopez has six rings. The Dallas Cowboys have zero.
3. Much has been said the last couple of days about Shohei Ohtani’s new contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
For those keeping score at home, here are the largest deals in MLB history:
- 1. Shohei Ohtani, Dodgers: 10 years, $700 million.
- 2. Mike Trout, Angels: 12 years, $426.5 million.
- 3. Mookie Betts, Dodgers: 12 years, $356 million.
- 4. Aaron Judge, Yankees: 9 years, $360 million.
- 5. Manny Machado, Padres: 11 years, $350 million.
- 6. Francisco Lindor, Mets: 10 years, $341 million.
- 7. Fernando Tatis, Padres: 14 years, $340 million.
- 8. Bryce Harper, Phillies: $13 years, $330 million.
- 9. Giancarlo Stanton, Yankees: 13 years, $325 million.
- 10. Corey Seager, Rangers: 10 years, $325 million.
