DAILY DIRT: Go ahead, make my day … but only if you can handle the truth

Daily Dirt for Sunday, Oct. 23, 2022

I tend to use the Clark Gable quote more than I should with the Little Woman … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 433 of The Daily Dirt.

1. The best movie lines ever?

We all have our favorites, and personally it’s way too difficult to narrow them down to, say, the top three when talking about all genres of film. So I’m going to take a few days and give you my medal winners in some specific categories. Today we’re starting with dramatic films:

Gold medal: “Go ahead, make my day” — Clint Eastwood as detective Harry Callahan in “Sudden Impact” (1983).

Silver medal: “You can’t handle the truth!” — Jack Nicholson as Col. Nathan R. Jessup in “A Few Good Men” (1992).

Bronze medal:“Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings.” — Karolyn Grimes as Zuzu in “It’s A Wonderful Life” (1946).

Honorable mentions

  • “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” — Clark Gable as Rhett Butler in “Gone with the Wind”(1939).
  • “Get busy livin’ or get busy dyin’ … ” — Morgan Freeman as Red in “The Shawshank Redemption” (1994).
  • “The stuff that dreams are made of.” — Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade in “The Maltese Falcon (1941).
  • “Here’s looking at you, kid.” — Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine in “Casablanca” (1942).
  • “You talkin’ to me?” — Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle in “Taxi Driver” (1976).
  • “Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.” — Al Pacino as Michael Corleone in “The Godfather Part II” (1974).
  • “I’m the king of the world!” — Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson in “Titanic” (1997).
  • “I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!” — Peter Finch as Howard Beale in “Network” (1976).
  • “Nobody puts Baby in a corner.” — Patrick Swayze as Johnny Castle in “Dirty Dancing” (1987).

3. Let’s start the week on a really disgusting note.

Here’s this week’s most deplorable food offering, thanks to thekitchencommunity.org: This dish, served mostly in Japan, Russia and Europe, doesn’t exactly look disgusting, but the contents of it definitely are. The dish in question resembles some weird mayonnaise-type substance, but is actually milt or soft roe — fish semen.

For some reason, this odd meal is considered a delicacy in several countries across the world. Milt can be fried and served with horseradish, pickled or eaten as a pasta topping. The sperm sacs are said to have a fishy taste. It can be eaten grilled, fried, on top of rice, or even on top of custard.
The types of fish that the milt is taking from are generally herring, tuna, cod, carp, pollock, sea bream and snakeheads.
