Daily Dirt for Sunday May 12, 2024

Before you’re done reading today’s installment, you’ll discover what my spirit animal might just be … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 945 of The Daily Dirt.

1. Well, well, well … let me be the first to try and ruin your Sunday.

Here are three of the most disgusting canned foods that you can actually buy:

Rattlesnake: Available from selected retailers, including Walmart, the rattlesnake meat is smoked and skinned (not necessarily in that order). The rattlesnake meat is packed in a broth and known for its supposed mild taste. Mild taste? As compared to what?

Birds nest drink: Known for a slimy, sweet texture, using bird saliva. Very popular in China and Vietnam. Let it stay there, please.

Scorpion: Sold online, scorpion is considered a “crunchy” snack. In case you were wondering, the venom is removed prior to canning. Umm … if I want a “crunchy” snack, I’ll still go for potato chips.

2. Did you know (Part 12) …

  • That Los Angeles (Calif.) County has a higher population than 40 other states.
  • That before famed director George A. Romero became a household name in the horror industry for his iconic “Night of the Living Dead” zombie movie, he directed kids show “Mr. Rogers Neighborhood”.
  • That then-President Richard M. Nixon asked a young member of a Japanese martial arts team that was visiting the White House in 1974 to someday be his bodyguard. That young man was Jet Li.
  • That one of the kids who played on the slip and slide in the “Edward Scissorhands” movie was Nick Carter, who went on to be one of the Backstreet Boys.
  • That when Mean Joe Greene was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers, one of the undrafted free agents that year was a player named Ed O’Neill, who went on to star on “Married … with Children” and “Modern Family”.

3. Here’s the best of what we “Found on Facebook” this week:

  • “I want you to know somebody cares. Not me, but somebody else.”
  • “Take a baseball player and throw them in any other sport and they’ll compete. Take any other athlete, throw them a 95 mph fastball they won’t touch it.”
  • “When there’s a meteor shower, Chuck Norris grabs a bar of soap.”
  • “We do not have a town drunk. We all take turns.”
  • — “In search of fresh vegetable puns. Lettuce know.”

Steve Thought O’ The Day – Today I learned that ostriches often walk around then forget where they are going. Today I also learned that my spirit animal may be an ostrich.

Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. And here I thought a hamburger was his spirit animal.
