Daily Dirt: ‘Modern Family’ or salty snacks? The choice is obvious

Daily Dirt for Nov. 6, 2021

The weekend is here. Let us celebrate Vol. 119 of the Daily Dirt and the ensuing three thoughts.

1. Have you ever gotten the feeling watching what was once a favorite show that maybe, just maybe, it should have ended a few seasons earlier?

If you have, you were probably right. Here’s a few examples of some of my own favorite programs that outlived their usefulness, not to mention entertainment value:

Gold medal, “Two and a Half Men”: When Ashton Kutcher arrived, this sitcom was dead in the water. It also didn’t help that Jake, once the epitome of the smart-ass kid, had grown up and was no longer entertaining — just annoying.

Silver medal, “Modern Family”: At its height, this show was a viewing must, but by the time this once-hilarious vehicle mercifully ended in April 2020, I was no longer even watching.

Bronze medal, “Happy Days”: As so often happens — especially with comedies — that are built around specific age groups, once some of the integral characters have obviously grown long in the tooth the show dies a slow and painfully humorless death. Fonzie and Co. were brutally unwatchable near the end of the series’ run.

2. It’s another College Football Saturday! We’re in November and that means the homestretch to the college football playoffs.

The first rankings from the CFP committee were released earlier this week and I have only a few relatively minor complaints. First of all, the top 10:

  • 1. Georgia
  • 2. Alabama
  • 3. Michigan State
  • 4. Oregon
  • 5. Ohio State
  • 6. Cincinnati
  • 7. Michigan
  • 8. Oklahoma
  • 9. Wake Forest
  • 10. Notre Dame

Some thoughts:– Cincinnati officials are bellyaching the Bearcats are too low. They’re not. They’re probably too high (and remember, I’m an Ohio boy). Cincinnati’s schedule — even though it beat Notre Dame at Notre Dame — is weak because of its conference (American). Remember, two years ago Ohio State blasted Cincinnati 42-0 in a game the Buckeyes could have put at least 75 on the board. Best advice for Cincinnati? Shut up and earn it.

Ohio State is probably a little low, but if the Buckeyes win out they will take care of the situation. Notice there is no crying coming out of Columbus. Ohio State has games remaining with No. 3 Michigan State and No. 7 Michigan. (PUBLISHER’S NOTE: Wait, Steve thinks tOSU is ranked too low? What??? JRG)

Steve as this little kid.

Wake Forest is way-y-y-y-y overrated. No further comment is needed.– Oklahoma struggled mightily to defeat Kansas (Kansas!) and Tulane, so No. 8 is, if anything, generous.– I give major props to the CFP committee. And in all likelihood, things will work out (as they always do) over the coming four weeks.

3. What are your most common purchases at your favorite grocery store/supermarket? According to money.howstuffworks.com, these are the 10 most popular items nationwide:

1. Bread. (My first thought is if so many people go to the store to buy bread, why not just buy multiple loaves beforehand and reduce the number of those trips?)

2. Packaged meats. (Hey, we’re carnivores. This should be expected.)

3. Peanut butter and jelly. (I do not like my peanut butter and jelly touching. I love them both separately, but keep them away from one another.)

4. Eggs. (Scrambled, please.)

5. Laundry detergent. (See first comment about bread. After all, you know you’ll be doing laundry more than once a month — or at least you should.)

6. Milk. (I have no smart-aleck comment about milk. Milk is milk, and that’s a good thing.)

7. Salty snacks. (Mmmm … snacks.)

8. Frozen dinners. (Americans buy an estimated $7 billion worth of frozen meals each year.)

9. Cereal. (Frosted Flakes, anyone?)

10. Soda. (I still refer to it as “pop”.)

Steve Fact O’ The Day: Steve vows to never again watch an episode of “Two and a Half Men,” “Modern Family” or Happy Days.” “I now hate all three of those shows,” said the wily veteran.

Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. Given a choice between Da Bears and tOSU, Steve would choose the Buckeyes.
